Shredder Questions

Shredders have become increasingly popular in recent years. Unfortunately, the rapid increase in identify theft has made the shredder important even to personal users. You need a shredder if:

• you are concerned about your own personal documents ending up in the wrong hands
• you have customer documents (like credit card numbers) in your records
• you handle employee records with salary and other information
• you are concerned about industrial espionage and your company data
• your company has requirements that necessitate shredding

Two major factors will determine what kind of shredder you need:

1. How Much will you Shred Every Day?
   • Small Office Shredders for 100 to 400 sheets per day
   • Office Shredders for 400 to 1,000 sheets per day
   • Departmental Shredders for 2,000 to 12,000 sheets per day

2. What Level of Security do you Need?

   Shredders cut documents either into strips or into cross-cut pieces. The narrower the strips and the finer the cross-cut pieces, the higher the level of security will be. That is, it becomes increasingly unlikely that a document can be pieced back together if the pieces are very, very small. Shredders in all the classes listed above, from economy to high capacity, have a choice of shred size. There are even high security shredders that meet the Top Secret COMSEC NSA/CSS Specification 02-01 of the U.S. Department of Defense.
